This holiday season we are gifting all of our friends a beautifully illustrated Maurice Sendak book and a jar of mug cake mix. Cake seems to be a common theme in a few of his books, so chocolate mug cake in a jar is the perfect companion. Yes, you really can make cake in a mug! It’s so easy and perfect to satisfy a single serving sweet tooth. This mug cake mix recipe was inspired by Sendak’s In The Night Kitchen and Mickey’s “morning cake”.
You might also recognize Sendak’s words and illustrations from the iconic Where the Wild Things Are book. I grew up reading Sendak and have grown to appreciate his beautiful illustrations as an adult. I love that I can help keep his legacy alive by sharing my favorite books with friends and family. This easy gift idea is perfect for teachers, coworkers, neighbors, friends and family!
INGREDIENTS
16oz Angel Food Cake Mix
(2) 15.25oz Devil’s Food Cake Mix
You’ll also need: 4 Pint Sized Jars, Printable Tags & String
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Mix all 3 cake mix boxes together.
Step 2: Place mixed cake mix in 4 pint sized mason jars. You’ll have a little left over for taste testing purposes.
Step 3: Use an electronic cutter to add “Stir it! Scrape it! Mix it! Bake it!” in white vinyl to the jars. The wording comes from the book In The Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak.
Step 4: Print out and cut the printable tags (scroll to the bottom for the free download link). Tie around the jar with a piece of string or twine.
Step 5: Gift the cake mug jar with a Maurice Sendak book! We especially love In The Night Kitchen. HarperCollins recently released Presto & Zesto in Limboland, a book discovered years after Maurice Sendak’s passing co-authored with his longtime friend, Arthur Yorinks. It also involves cake and would be another great book choice to go with the cake mug mix!
These books have played an important role in the lives of families across generations and are near and dear to my heart. The Maurice Sendak Foundation is devoted to promoting greater public interest in and understanding of the literary, illustrative and theatrical arts as well as promoting the artistic legacy of Maurice Sendak – visit www.SendakFoundation.org to learn more about the Maurice Sendak Foundation.
Step 6: Make sure to taste test your creation! As the tag says, mix 3 tbsp mug mix with 2 tbsp water. Microwave on high for 1 minute. You can top with whipped cream and enjoy!
